Abhijit Gangopadhyay gung-ho on BJP after quitting as High Court judge
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, said that he would join BJP on Thursday. He claimed that West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress was “crumbling” and was “on the verge of collapse”. Addressing a press conference here, Gangopadhyay said BJP’s slogan of “zero tolerance towards corruption” was the main reason why he was joining the saffron party. “Trinamool Congress means corruption, corruption means Trinamool Congress,” Gangopadhyay reiterated while announcing his decision to join BJP on March 7. “Trinamool Congress is a party of miscreants — it is not a political party but a yatra (folk theatre) show — ‘Ma, Maati Manush,” he said.

Aid for women not 'revdi'; using taxes for welfare, says Atishi
Delhi government's new scheme, Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, which promises ₹1,000 per month to women above 18 years of age is not «revdi» (freebie) but a social welfare initiative aimed at empowering women and boosting economic liquidity, Delhi finance minister Atishi has said. Speaking to ET, Atishi said AAP government's schemes had been criticised as «revdi» by political opponents but the state government was utilising taxes paid by the people for their welfare. «If we can run the government in fiscal surplus and also give the citizens of Delhi everything (free electricity, water, healthcare and education), why shouldn't we? What is bothering the opponents so much? Atishi presented the Budget 2024-25 on Monday, announcing the programme for women over 18 who are not income-tax payers, have a government employment, or get a pension. According to Delhi government estimates, 45-50 lakh women out of 67 lakh women voters will be eligible under this initiative.

Balanced regulation vital for growth, says Uday Kotak
Kotak Mahindra Bank founder Uday Kotak on Tuesday pitched for a balanced regulatory approach across sectors, contending that too many «guardrails» could weigh down India's growth and hurt its journey towards being a developed nation, while too few of them could invite trouble. The regulators, he suggested, should avoid undue and excessive caution but instead respond swiftly to crises or «accidents», he said. Addressing a two-day conference of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), Kotak said sacrificing growth to tackle risks is not a solution but problems need to be dealt with in an innovative manner. Kotak's comments come at a time when watchdogs across the financial sector-from the Reserve Bank of India to the Competition Commission of India-are increasingly facing pressure to balance regulations with innovation, especially due to the fast-paced evolution in the technology space. He said the aspirational annual growth rate of 7.5-8% over the next 20-25 years will require significant capacity building to match up to the fast transformation in the economic landscape.

China influences Nepal's coalition breakup
Chinese influence" may have played a role in encouraging the Leftist unity in Nepal with PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' dropping the Nepali Congress as its partner and form an alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN)-UML led by K P Sharma Oli. The year-long Nepali Congress and Prachanda-led CPN (Maoist Centre) coalition collapsed on Monday, with Prachanda joining hands with the CPN-UML to revive the «Left alliance». Thereafter, Prachanda reshuffled his cabinet to include ministers from the Communist party and created an eight-point programme to run Nepal. Despite contesting the elections in a pre-poll alliance with the Congress, Prachanda became the Prime Minister on December 26, 2022, with the UML's support. But the partnership could not last long after his party decided to support the Nepali Congress in the presidential election. The UML had pulled out of the government on February 27 last year, and Prachanda and Nepali Congress joined hands to form the government.

NCLT rejects Vistra ITCL’s plea to include additional claim in Satra Properties insolvency
NCLT) dismissed an application filed by Vistra ITCL to direct the resolution professional (RP) of realty developer Satra Properties India to include its additional claim of Rs 51 crore that would have taken its total admitted claim to over Rs 131 crore. Vistra informed the bankruptcy court that the RP had partially rejected the lenders’ financial claim, which should have been admitted in its entirety. Currently, the admitted amount against Satra Properties is around Rs 386 crore, wherein Vistra has a 22.25% voting share with admitted dues worth Rs 79 crore. Calculation of interest on outstanding non-convertible debentures (NCDs) formed a key component of the matter. In its application, Vistra argued that originally, it had agreed with Satra Properties to lend the funds at 18% interest per annum; however, the RP has calculated its dues at a lower revised rate of 9%.

Continue blending of 6 pc imported coal till June: Power Min to power plants
power ministry has asked domestic coal-based thermal power plants to continue blending six per cent of imported coal until June 2024 amid the projection of an all-time high peak power demand of 250 GW in summer. In a direction issued in October 2023, the power ministry had asked all thermal power plants to continue blending imported coal in view of supply issues and rising demand for electricity till March 2024 and also increase the blending proportion of imported coal from four per cent to six per cent in domestic fuel. In a similar direction issued to power plants on Monday, the ministry noted that the peak power demand is likely to touch 250 GW in the summer season (April to June 2024). The ministry has also observed that despite the increase in the loading of domestic coal rakes, the supplies of dry fuel will remain constrained due to various logistics issues associated with the railway network.
