India and China agreed to maintain «peace and tranquillity» on the ground in border areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh during a fresh round of high-level military talks earlier this week. Tear gas shells were fired by Haryana security personnel after some young farmers were heading towards the multi-layered barricades at the Shambhu border point at Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday. After Haryana Police lobbed tear gas canisters at around 11 am, young farmers ran for cover. Farmers, protesting at the two border points of Punjab and Haryana, will resume their 'Delhi Chalo' march today after they rejected the BJP-led Centre's proposal for procuring pulses, maize and cotton at the MSP by government agencies for five years. Thousands of farmers, who began the march to Delhi on February 13, were stopped at the Haryana border itself, where they clashed with security personnel. The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri points on Punjab's border with Haryana since then.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, on Wednesday reiterated the demand for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) and assured a 'peaceful' approach going ahead. The farmers' leader emphasized that all farmers would not proceed together in the 'Dilli Chalo' march; instead, only the farmer leaders would march towards the national capital. «We have decided that no farmer, youth will march forward. Leaders will march ahead. We will not attack our Jawans. We will go peacefully. All this can be ended if they (central govt) make a law on MSP,» Sarwan Singh Pandher said while speaking to ANI.

He added, “TMC does not want to go with an alliance with the CPI (m), similarly there are issues with the TMC and the Congress. We have not resolved these issues; in these situations, the seniors (senior India bloc leadership) possibly from outside the state would sit soon (to resolve the issues).”

Fali S Nariman passed away on Wednesday, at the age of 95. Nariman was a senior advocate of the Supreme Court and an eminent jurist. Awarded both the Padma Bhushan, in January 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan, in 2007, the veteran was a practicing lawyer for over seven decades. Nariman enrolled as an advocate of the Bombay High Court in November 1950, and was designated a senior advocate in 1961. In 1972, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India. In June 1975, he resigned from his post to protest against the decision of the Indira Gandhi government to declare emergency. For a decade, from 1991 to 2010, Nariman was the president of the Bar Association of India. In addition, he held various positions of note, including the vice-chairmanship of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) Paris, from 1989 to 2005, and the presidency of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration.

China's stock exchanges on Tuesday said major quant fund Lingjun Investment had broken rules on orderly trading and barred it from buying and selling for three days, as part of wider regulatory efforts to revive market confidence. Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to slash the penalty on property taxes in Bengaluru city limits by 50 percent. The bill is titled Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Amendment Bill 2024. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru development portfolio, tabled the bill in the Legislative Assembly. «With the passing of this Amendment Bill, the penalty amount is halved, saving Bengalureans a whopping Rs 2,700 crores. The BBMP will be able to collect penalties worth Rs 1000 crore,» a statement issued by Shivakumar's office said.
