rupee ended slightly higher on Tuesday as dollar demand from importers capped gains that came on the back of likely inflows, traders said. The rupee ended at 82.9625 against the U.S. dollar, higher by 0.06% compared to its close at 83.0150 in the previous session.

Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd.(up 2.63 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd.(up 2.42 per cent), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd.(up 1.8 per cent), IndusInd Bank Ltd.(up 1.39 per cent) and Bank of Baroda(up 0.95 per cent) ended the day as top gainers in the pack.

Hungary's ruling Fidesz party proposed on Tuesday that parliament should vote to ratify Sweden's bid to join NATO on Feb. 26, a move that it would support. «Our group wishes to support» Sweden's NATO bid, the Fidesz party said in a document, asking the Speaker of parliament to include the vote in its agenda next Monday. Fidesz has a huge majority in parliament. Sweden applied to join NATO nearly two years ago, in a historic shift in policy prompted by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Sandeshkhali (WB), Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who arrived in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday afternoon after getting permission from the Calcutta High Court, described the situation in the strife-torn area as «horrific» and a «clear example of anarchy». Adhikari, along with another BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh, spoke to the locals, including women, who narrated their «spine-chilling» experiences endured at the hands of local TMC leaders, including absconding Shahjahan Sheikh. The BJP leaders were welcomed by locals, including women, after they reached Sandeshkhali by crossing the Kalindi River on a boat from Dhamakhali. «The experiences narrated by the locals are spine-chilling. Their lands have been usurped, and women exploited… and everything happened with the help of the police and the administration. The situation is completely horrific and is a clear example of anarchy prevailing in the area,» he said.

Centre accept their demands, including a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for crops and farm loan waiver, and said they will head to Delhi on Wednesday. His statement came a day after the farmer leaders taking part in the «Delhi Chalo» agitation rejected the Centre's proposal for procuring pulses, maize and cotton at the MSP by government agencies for five years, saying it was not in favour of farmers. In the fourth round of talks with the farmer leaders on Sunday, a panel of three Union ministers proposed that government agencies would buy pulses, maize and cotton at the MSP for five years after entering into an agreement with farmers. Editors Guild of India on Tuesday termed as «worrisome» the arrest of an on-duty television journalist by the West Bengal Police. In a statement here, the Guild said the journalist — Santu Pan — was reporting live on television when he was whisked away by policemen. Pan, a journalist with Repulic Bangla, was arrested from Sandeshkhali in West Bengal on Monday late evening. «His arrest while on duty is worrisome,» the Guild said.

Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved a bill, extending reservation to Marathas above the 50 per cent mark in a special session of the state legislature. The bill for 10 per cent Maratha quota that the Mahayuti government of Eknath Shinde has approved on Tuesday is similar to the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2018, introduced by the then Devendra Fadnavis government. This is the third time in a decade that the state has introduced legislation for the Maratha quota.

Creditors’ recovery from defaulters under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) dropped to almost 26% of their admitted claims in the December quarter from 33% in the previous three months, showed the latest data compiled by the insolvency regulator. The realisation in the December quarter—Rs 4,281 crore from 79 firms—seems to have been hit by long delays in resolution. About two dozen of these rescued firms saw the resolution processes stretching beyond four years, well beyond the stipulated time frame of 270 days, suggesting erosion of the stressed asset value. The recovery, however, was 74.7% of the fair value of the stressed companies when they were admitted for resolution and 128.6% of the liquidation value of these companies, according to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India data.

The NSE Nifty index was trading 23.71 points down at 22098.55, while BSE Sensex was up 35.19 points at 72743.35 at the time of writing this report.

Sensex rose 281 points to settle at 72,708 and the broader Nifty closed at its all-time high of 22,122 points. Stocks that were in focus included names like Novartis India, which rose 15.44%, Global Health, which fell 2.9%, and YES Bank, whose shares declined 4.58% on Monday.
