tigers were on the prowl in the farmlands of Lakhimpur Kheri district who had killed several people. The then chief wildlife warden Chandra Bhan Singh constituted four teams to rein in the tigers and Dr Rahul Shukla joined this expedition as an expert on farmland wildlife. The team reached my place in Gola, famous for its Shiva temple named Gokaran Nath. Here I was first introduced to Shukla by Late Shiv Chandra Dixit, my neighbour and a member of legislative council. I was 25 then.

Things can be quite tame in the great wildlife
pandas. This is only partly true. While the Chinese probably never adopted them as pets because they leave awful black and white stains on the couch, they are remarkably useless otherwise as well. Most of the time, sitting on their lazy asses, their low desire to procreate is baffling. Certainly considering they are at risk of extinction. Pandas can't even be relied on for their own survival. I will let that sink in. Pandas can't be seen in the wild anymore. The closest they get is a breeding reserve in Chengdu. Considering the gastronomic delights the city has to offer, in which Sichuan pepper gives dishes their distinct flavour, it is a shame to see pandas limit themselves to bamboo.

Why have U.S. Wildlife officials planned to kill half a million barred owls? Know about the controversy
wildlife officials have introduced a plan to deploy trained shooters into dense West Coast forests to eliminate nearly half a million barred owls to protect the endangered spotted owl populations in Oregon, Washington, and California. This strategy, detailed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, aims to counter the decline of spotted owls, as barred owls have increasingly crowded out their smaller cousins. Spotted owls struggle to compete with barred owls, which have larger broods and need less space to survive, as per the reports of Yahoo news.

Dive into the Antarctic
Safari Stories' podcast, where Hadley Pierce and Jomi Krobb, co-founders of South Africa-based guided wildlife and conservation tours company Trunks and Tracks, share their wild tales. In the episode, Action of the Antarctic Peninsula, they plunge into those frigid waters and recount some epic sightings, including watching humpback whales feed, a large pod of killer whales bow- riding a ship, and leopard seals hunting penguins. In the 40-min podcast, Hadley's narration is so vivid that it makes us feel as if we are sitting in the boat, watching marine life unfold its minutest secrets. 'There is ice everywhere, lots and lots of icebergs, some of which are many times bigger than the ship… they are very impressive,' recounts Hadley.

Centre proposes ESZ for villages on fringes of Bhitarkanika National Park
Bhitarkanika National Park and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Odisha's Kendrapara district and its nearby areas. Bhitarkanika is known as the second largest mangrove forest in India after Sundarbans and Gahirmatha is known as the world's largest rookery of sea turtles. The Eco-sensitive Zone shall be 497.67 square kilometre with an extent of 0.10 kilometre to 8.7 kilometre around the boundary of Bhitarkanika National Park, Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and Gahirmatha (Marine) Wildlife Sanctuary, said assistant conservator of forest (ACF) of the national park, Manas Das. Eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) is a buffer area covering 205 villages of Aul, Pattamundai, Rajnagar, Rajkanika and Mahakalapada blocks in Kendrapara district and Chandabali block in Bhadrak district around the core protected forest areas to minimize human-wildlife conflict, promote in-situ conservation of wildlife and reduce the impact on fragile ecosystems, he said.

Apple Watch takes on new role in wildlife, employed to monitor heart rates of lions
@apple Watch can measure a lion's heart rate if you strap it to the tongue (even if it is one of the less conventional 'off-label' uses for the device). Either way, it's a true 'technology meets conservation' story." This inventive technique was inspired by Dr. Fabiola Quesada, a well-known wildlife and conservation veterinarian.
