40 seats of Jammu and Kashmir go to polls today, main contest between BJP and Congress in Jammu
This phase is largely focused on Jammu division where 24 seats will see voting while 16 are from the Kashmir valley. The fate of candidates like People’s Conference chief Sajad Lone, BJP’s Devender Rana, Lal Singh and Raman Bhalla (Congress), Engineer Rashid’s brother Sheikh Khurshid, among others, will be decided in this phase.
Just ahead of the last phase, the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israel cast a shadow on the polls as PDP and some other parties suspended their election campaigns on Monday, the last day of campaigning for this phase, in protest against the killing of the Hezbollah leader.
In the Jammu division, the fight for Dogra pride and having a Hindu chief minister has been part of the BJP rhetoric during the campaign.
The 16 seats in Kashmir are spread in 3 districts across Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora along the Line of Control in northern Kashmir while the 24 seats in Jammu division are spread across four districts of Udhampur, Jammu, Samba and Kathua. Seven SC reserved seats, located in Jammu division are also going to polls in this phase and the BJP has high hopes from them.
