India BusTrack, a data-based report on the Indian intercity bus industry on Wednesday. redBus said the inaugural report covers key parameters reflecting the overall health and trends of the Indian bus industry in November and December last year. The market trends are restricted to private bus operators and do not include SRTCs (State Road Transport Corporations).
As per the report, the private bus industry saw gross ticketing value of Rs 3600 crore in November-December 2023 and 36.06 million passengers traveled during the period. There are 3,63,918 unique bus routes in India and buses connect 8,530 towns across the length and breadth of the country, making the reach of the bus network on par with railways, according to the report.
Maharashtra and Goa topped the charts with 82% bus occupancy in November and December last year according to the report, while Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh saw the lowest occupancy at 67%. The all India bus occupancy rate was 77%.
Metros contributed 33% to bus bookings, while other areas accounted for 67%, illustrating the 'growing' importance of tier-II and tier-III cities and increased digital penetration into non-metro areas, on redBus platforms, the company said in a statement. 62% of the passengers opted for AC buses indicating a clear preference for comfortable travel. 50% preferred sleeper buses, and 33% chose hybrid options.
