electric two-wheelers sold in India are manufactured in Tamil Nadu, the state's minister for industries, TRB Rajaa, claimed at an event on Saturday. Rajaa, who was speaking at the ‘Tamil Nadu Startup Thiruvizha 2023’ in Coimbatore, said the state is not just a leader in textiles, but in the automotive and electronics sector too. He said electronics exports from the state in the last one year has risen to $5.37 billion.
The event was organised by StartupTN, Tamil Nadu's nodal agency for Startup and Innovation. "(In) EVs, we are already big and are growing exponentially," he said. «We have (about) 450 charging stations in Tamil Nadu (and 6,500 in India, as of March 2023), but by 2030 (India) is expected to have 1.3 million charging stations,» Rajaa said.
“It is such a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs and MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises).” He also said there is a huge opportunity in battery recycling, which could grow to 128 GWh by 2030. «We need to work on the entire EV ecosystem as one family,» Rajaa said. StartupTN Mission director and CEO Sivarajah Ramanathan told ET that the EV opportunity is unique as it is a sector that is seeing a lot of activity from startups.
He said in the case of EVs, there is a connection between startups, MSMEs and large-scale industries and, hence, it is one area that the agency is focusing on. It was only last month that StartupTN, along with investment promotion agency Guidance TN and other stakeholders launched the Automotive, Electric Vehicle (EV) and Smart Mobility Forum for the state's startups.
