Authorities said they were surveying for signs of damage. The closest city to the epicenter, Ferndale, has a population of about 1,300 people; the quake was also felt more than 200 miles to the south in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sacramento Valley to the east.
The National Weather Service briefly issued a tsunami warning in coastal counties in Northern California and southern Oregon, telling residents to head inland or for high ground, but it canceled the alert about an hour after the quake occurred.
Stephen DeLong, a supervisory research geologist at the USGS Earthquake Science Center in Menlo Park, California, called the quake a «large but somewhat typical event.»
It struck on the Mendocino Fault, DeLong said, near an area known as the Mendocino Triple Junction, which he called the most seismically active area in California.
