«Ongoing global geopolitical tensions have further strained supply chains and increased logistics costs, affecting production timelines and the availability of critical components,» said Pradeep Bakshi, MD & CEO of Voltas.
The rupee has depreciated over 5% against the dollar in the past year, driving up costs for both imported and locally sourced raw materials, said Kamal Nandi, business head and executive vice-president (appliances business) at Godrej Enterprises Group. «We are expected to undertake price adjustment decisions by the end of the month,» he said.
Voltas’s Bakshi pointed out that higher input costs are directly impacting the final price of AC units. While companies are ramping up domestic production to reduce dependence on imports, India's AC manufacturing ecosystem still falls short of meeting demand.
Despite the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme boosting local production, India continues to rely heavily on imports, particularly from China. The country needs around 14 million AC units annually, but its local compressor manufacturing capacity can support only about eight million, industry sources said.
