Hongchi Xiao, 61, from Cloudbreak, California, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence in July after a jury in Winchester, southern England, found that he was responsible for the death of 71-year-old Danielle Carr-Gomm. The incident occurred in October 2016 during a session meant to help Carr-Gomm manage her diabetes.
Xiao was found to have «unlawfully killed» Carr-Gomm while leading a «paida lajin» workshop, a controversial alternative therapy where participants are slapped or encouraged to slap themselves. The jury concluded that Xiao failed in his duty of care by not seeking medical assistance when Carr-Gomm was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal condition caused by a lack of insulin.
Judge Robert Bright stated that Xiao was aware from the afternoon of the first day of the workshop that Carr-Gomm had stopped taking her insulin. Despite this, he made only a «token effort» to get her to resume her medication and showed no significant remorse for her death. The judge described Xiao as dangerous, despite his lack of the typical traits seen in dangerous offenders, and noted that he continued to promote and practice paida lajin in prison.
In addition to his 10-year sentence, Xiao will be subject to a further five years of extended supervision after his release. He will be eligible for release after serving two-thirds of his sentence and could face deportation to the United States, where he is a citizen.
