Ajit Agarkar has been appointed as new chairman of senior men's selection panel, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on Tuesday. Agarkar replaces Chetan Sharma, who who had to step down in February following a controversial sting operation. Agarkar in his new assignment is expected to get a much higher remuneration as compared to annual paycheck of Rs 1 crore per year for the chairman of selectors.
The remaining members of the selection committee currently get Rs 90 lakh each. Cricket website Cricbuzz.com reported that Agarkar could be getting a annual paycheck of Rs 3 crore as chairman of selectors, though the amount was not confirmed. A three-member committee appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday recommended Agarkar for the role of chairperson of the Men's Selection Committee «based on seniority», from the total number of Test matches.
Agarkar was most recently a part of the coaching staff of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 and was released from his post. The other members of the selection committee are Salil Ankola (West zone) Subroto Banerjee (Central Zone), S Sharath from South zone and SS Das from East zone. The Agarkar-led selection committee's first assignment will be picking India's T20I squad for the tour of West Indies.
Agarkar was part of the 1999, 2003 and 2007 India ODI World Cup squad. He was also part of 2007 World T20 winning Indian team. In total, he played 191 ODIs apart from 26 Tests and 4 T20Is.
He held the record for being the fastest to reach 50 ODI wickets. He also has a Test hundred to his name, scored at Lord's. His record of fastest half-century by an Indian batter in ODI, achieved with a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000, is still unbroken.
