Billionaire businessman Anand Mahindra on Thursday took to Twitter to share with his more than 10.5 million followers one such habit he learnt about. Alongside a one-minute-long video of eight-time Grammy Award producer Rick Rubin, the Chairman of Mahindra Group said that acquiring this «most difficult» habit — listening without bias — can change the world for good. «If people followed this man’s example, they would be the most powerful change agent in the world.
The most difficult habit for us to acquire: Listening. Without bias,» he tweeted. In the brief video, the American record producer describes it as «being a recorder.» When listening, Rubin says that one should start the conversation with a blank mind with no preconceived ideas.
This practice involves not thinking about the next best response or opinion. One should only focus on hearing what comes in, and, processing the details without getting swayed by previous beliefs. At the same time, one should be neutral and not react to as much as possible.
«My goal is not to form an opinion, it's to understand,» Rubin could be heard saying in the video. If one hears words that trigger him/her, being able to not challenge them is the real strength. Instead, Rubin suggests asking questions to understand why or how the person feels the way s/he feels.
By mindfully taking baby steps towards listening, one can become refined and transformed. Mahindra certainly seems to be in favour of Rubin's advice, and so do his followers. The auto boss' post got more than 80K views, hours after it was posted.
