Andy Murray returned to China for the first time in four years and won his first-round match at the Zhuhai Championships on Thursday. He thrashed local wild card Mo Ye Cong 7-5, 6-3. It was Andy Murray's fifth tour title in China and the first since the Beijing Open in 2016. The seventh-seeded British player overpowered his 23-year-old opponent in the second set to take the match in 1 hour and 42 minutes.
The opening set against world number 668 was a closely-fought encounter. Wild card Mo bounced back to draw level, but the British ace broke serve in the final game to edge the set 7-5.
Murray fought back in the second set to win the advantage. Mo once again leveled, but Murray pulled away and served up his 10th ace of the match to win 6-3.
Sharing his experience with the media, Murray said that it was a very fast court. He added that the conditions were very humid and Mo Ye Cong played a solid level and pushed him while he was trying to adjust to the conditions. He also said that once he managed to get ahead in the second set, he felt a little bit more comfortable.
He will next play 63rd-ranked Aslan Karatsev, who defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2.
After being forced to exit in the second round at the US Open, Andy Murray is trying to rediscover his form at the hard-court event this week.
The world No 41 has already skipped the Laver Cup to play in this week’s ATP 250 event. He wants to use this event as a springboard for a good end to the 2023 season.
Before going to China, the 36-year-old was part of Britain’s winning squad in the Davis Cup. Britain booked a spot in the Final 8 of the ‘World Cup of Tennis’.
