The Anjuman Auqaf, which runs affairs of Jama Masjid, informed that Mirwaiz was not allowed to offer Friday prayers for the second consecutive week. Anjuman hoped that the hearing of the Mirwaiz’s case for “complete release” from house arrest in the J&K High Court, slated for May 25, will provide the relief that people are eagerly awaiting.
“Infact Mirwaiz’s movement has been completely curbed since last Friday while journalists or media persons are barred from meeting him,” Anjuman informed. The Anjuman further stated that this repeated detention of the religious head, especially keeping him away from Jama Masjid on Fridays is «very disturbing and upsets the people deeply.» “But in the present times it has to be borne with patience,” read the Anjuman statement.
Mirwaiz was put under house arrest on August 4, 2019, a day before the special status of J&K was abrogated and the erstwhile state was downgraded into the two union territories of J&K and Ladakh. After over four years, Mirwaiz was released and allowed to address Friday congregation at Jama Masjid on September 22, 2023. However, within two weeks, administration disallowed Mirwaiz to visit Jama Masjid fearing pro-palestinian protests in the wake of Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
