Another feather in Indian cap: Country becomes OIML issuing authority
OIML certificates — mandatory certification required for measuring instruments, said Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs on Thursday.
The OIML — International Organisation of Legal Metrology — is an international standard-setting body which develops regulations, standards and related documents for use by legal metrology authorities and industry.
Established in 1955, headquartered in Paris, harmonises international regulations of measuring instruments like clinical thermometers, alcohol breath analysers, radar speed measuring instruments, ship tanks found at ports, and petrol dispensing units.
«It is a single certificate accepted worldwide, » said Singh adding that this would help manufacturers of measuring devices in India help get the certificate faster and also earn foreign exchange for the country as international manufacturers are applying for the certificate in India.
India is the 13th country to become an issuing authority.
