Apple plans to improve texting between iPhone and Android devices by adopting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. This feature, a company spokesperson told 9to5Mac, will work alongside iMessage, Apple's native messaging service.
9to5Mac on Thursday reported that an Apple spokesperson said that RCS, that is available on Android phones, will now be coming to the iPhone series and will work alongside iMessage.
«Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association,» an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to 9to5Mac.
The company said the new technology would work alongside iMessage and offer better interoperability than SMS or MMS, the report added.
«We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.»
Apple also confirmed that blue bubbles will still be used to represent iMessages, while green bubbles will symbolise RCS messages.
The company uses blue bubbles to denote what it believes is the best and most secure way for iPhone users to communicate, which is iMessage.
There was no mention of the timeline in which Apple plans to roll this out. This is likley to improve how texts are exchanged between Apple iPhones and other phones, as RCS has the capability to support typing indicators, high-quality media sharing and in-line reactions.
