According to the study, Tesla cars have a fatal crash rate of 5.6 per billion miles driven. This is higher than other brands like Kia, which has a fatal crash rate of 5.5, and Buick at 4.8. The national average fatal crash rate for all cars in the U.S. stands at 2.8 per billion miles. However, the study highlights that Tesla’s high crash rate does not indicate that their vehicles are inherently unsafe.

The study also pointed out that Tesla vehicles come equipped with advanced safety technology. In fact, the 2024 Tesla Model Y was awarded the Top Safety Pick+ award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Tesla cars are known for their innovative safety features, including automatic emergency braking and collision avoidance systems, designed to prevent accidents.
Karl Brauer, an executive analyst at iSeeCars, explained that the higher fatal crash rate in Tesla vehicles may reflect a combination of factors, such as driving behavior and road conditions. He emphasized that a responsible, alert driver who follows traffic laws is most likely to avoid accidents, regardless of the car model they drive.
