beef in restaurants, hotels and public places, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday. A decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet to amend the existing law on beef consumption to incorporate the new provisions.
«We have decided to ban serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotel and public places,» Sarma said.
«In Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel, nor will it be allowed in any public function or public place. Earlier, our decision was to stop eating beef near temples, but now we have expanded it to the entire state. You will not be able to eat it in any community or public space, hotel, or restaurant,» said the Assam Chief Mnister.
Previously, Consumption of beef was not illegal in Assam, but The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in majority and within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery). Now, the ban has been expanded to other public areas.
After the announcement, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika, retweeted the CM’s announcement and challenged the opposition Congress, saying, “I challenge Assam Congress to welcome the beef ban or go and settle in Pakistan.”
