The AFL is the winner in the battle for the new chairman of Greater Western Sydney, with its preferred candidate, Tim Reed, to take the helm.
Mr Reed, president of the Business Council of Australia, will become the second chairman of the AFL’s western Sydney club, replacing Tony Shepherd who led the Giants since their 2011 inception.
Mr Reed, a GWS board member, was widely considered the preferred candidate of the AFL Commission and new chief executive Andrew Dillon.

He was appointed over at least one other candidate, deputy GWS chairman Adrian Fonseca, who in an interview with AFR’s BOSS publicly announced his hat was in the ring. Board member Nikki Warburton (the wife of Seven West Media CEO James Warburton) was also suggested as a candidate, but she dampened suggestions she was interested in the role, which is unpaid.
Mr Shepherd, who retired after the AFL grand final and was also previously a president of the BCA, said Mr Reed was a highly experienced director with “outstanding business acumen”.
“The Giants have a very strong and committed board of directors and Tim’s appointment will ensure a seamless transition into the club’s next phase,” Mr Shepherd said.
Mr Reed said he admired the work of Mr Shepherd, who helmed the AFL’s youngest club through a period where it contested six finals in 12 years.
“The opportunities for both the Giants and the AFL as a code are significant and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to chair a hardworking and capable team as we seek continued success on-field and building our base off the field,” Mr Reed said.
