While cybersecurity firms believe many of these teams are backed by the Chinese government, China's authorities have consistently denied any involvement in state-sponsored hacking. They assert that China is also a frequent target of cyberattacks and have referred to the U.S. as an «empire of hacking.» Here are some major hacking teams based out of China.
STORM-0558Chinese hackers have been accused of accessing email accounts of approximately 25 organizations, including U.S. government agencies and Microsoft, since May. The compromised accounts reportedly include those of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, U.S. envoy to China Nicholas Burns, and Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia. Microsoft stated that a China-based actor, dubbed Storm-0558, misused one of its digital keys and exploited a code flaw to steal emails. China's embassy in Washington dismissed the allegations and cautioned against baseless accusations regarding the source of cyber attacks.
'VOLT TYPHOON'On May 24, Western intelligence agencies and Microsoft accused Volt Typhoon, a state-sponsored group, of conducting extensive cyber-espionage on various critical infrastructure organizations in the U.S., including telecommunications and transportation hubs. The attacks in 2023 were labeled as one of the largest Chinese cyber-espionage campaigns targeting American critical infrastructure. China's foreign ministry denied these allegations.
