Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a veiled attack on the BJP at an event celebrating former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, terming the party as «poison» that needs to be removed completely. The event, marked as ‘Sadbhavana Diwas’, was attended by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray who highlighted Congress as a better ally compared to BJP. Thackeray wore a Congress stole for the first time, signifying a shift in political alliances.
Kharge accused the BJP of having a negative impact, stating, “BJP is like a poison.
There is no need to taste it because we know the results. It needs to be removed completely.” He emphasized the need for a Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to prevent BJP from making amendments to the Constitution. He underlined the importance of winning the state assembly elections to maintain legislative influence, including in the Rajya Sabha.
Kharge cited examples like the amendment bill for waqf land and lateral entry on a contract basis, and noted, “They withdrew the lateral entry decision because you are strong. If not, they would have recruited people from RSS background.”
Uddhav Thackeray, who attended a Congress event for the first time, made clear his stance on the differences between Congress and BJP. “After understanding a person, we need to change ourselves.
I have realised that they misused us and have now started weakening us. The difference between Rajiv ji (former PM Rajiv Gandhi) and them is clear,” said Thackeray. He appreciated that Congress governments had never acted vindictively against the Shiv Sena despite his father Bal Thackeray’s harsh criticism.
