The sound of Tata and Ashok Leyland buses wasn’t something I had expected to encounter in the Seychelles, but once you come out of the tiny airport that connects the archipelago’s main island of Mahé to the world, it is hard to miss.
In a country where hardly anyone honks, and where the ambient sound is often the soothing kiss of the waves on beaches and the chirpy chatter of birds, the racket from these buses stands apart like a throaty growl for attention.
Painted in a distinctive shade of blue, they are a signature of the public transport on two main islands, Mahé and Praslin—something like the red double-decker buses of London. The Seychelles has even issued stamps featuring these buses.
These buses also reflect the many ways in which geopolitics plays out. On the side of the vehicles, it is spelt out: these come from India and are a sign of its friendship with the Seychelles.
