As soon as Starmer brought up these sensitive topics, Chinese officials abruptly forced British journalists out of the room. Despite attempts by Starmer's team to keep reporters present, the Chinese delegation physically removed them, reflecting Beijing’s hard stance on freedom of expression and dissent. The sensitive references to Hong Kong and Jimmy Lai particularly stung, as Lai’s trial for national security charges continues.
China’s Push for New Ties
While Xi emphasized the potential for cooperation in trade, investment, and clean energy, the British side stressed the need for a “challenging” yet “respectful” relationship. Starmer conveyed Britain’s concerns over human rights violations, underlining the continued deterioration of freedoms in Hong Kong. Yet, he agreed with Xi’s call for a robust bilateral relationship, emphasizing the UK’s consistent rule-of-law commitment.
