government has named senior telecom department official Robert Jerard Ravi as chairman and managing director (CMD) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), along with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) and Bharat Broadband Network (BBNL) for a period of six months.
According to an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, the government has decided to not extend the tenure of Pravin Kumar Purwar, current CMD of BSNL beyond July 14.
«Entrustment of additional charge of the post of CMD, BSNL along with CMD, MTNL and CMD, BBNL to Ravi A Robert Jerard, DDG (SRl), DoT for a period of six months w.e.f. July 15, 2024, till January 14, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier,» the order said.
During the period of holding additional charge, Ravi will not be entitled to any additional remuneration, the order added. Purwar was also handling the additional charge of MTNL and BBNL. His five-year tenure ends on July 14.
Although Purwar had one more year still left in his service in BSNL, the Centre decided against giving him an extension as CMD, following which he retired at the end of his tenure, said officials familiar with the matter. The government has not given a reason for not extending Purwar's tenure.
People cited above said the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has filed a chargesheet against Purwar and some other senior BSNL officials. The step followed an inquiry, which showed certain alleged irregularities in the conduct of some BSNL officials.
