Tata Electronics’ proposal to set up a semiconductor chip fabrication unit in India, making it the country’s first pure-play foundry.
The Rs 91,000-crore project will be set up in Gujarat’s Dholera district in partnership with Taiwanese Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Union communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a press briefing on Thursday.
The foundry is estimated to produce 50,000 wafers per month, with each wafer constituting 5,000 chips. The annual production is estimated to be 300 crore chips catering to eight sectors: high power compute, electric vehicles, telecom, defence, consumer electronics, automobile and power electronics.
The cabinet also approved proposals for Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Unit’s (TSAT) semiconductor test facility in Assam and Murugappa group's CG Power’s OSAT unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
Cumulatively, the three projects involve an investment outlay of Rs 1,26,000 crore, of which Rs 47,704 crore is committed by the Central government. In total, they will create 20,000 advanced technology jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs.
