Astronomy and Planetary Science at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, has bagged The Shaw Prize, 2024.
Kulkarni is the younger brother of well-known writer and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty, and hails from Karnataka. He was born in Kurundwad, near Sangli in Maharashtra and studied at Hubballi. He topped in the class, both in studies and in other school competitions, his sister Dr Vimala Kulkarni had told ET, in a recent chat. He was always keen on experimenting with things, anything new, she had said.
Also known as the Nobel of the East, the prize from the Hong Kong-based Shaw Prize Foundation recognises contributions one has made to furthering societal progress, enhancing quality of life, and enriching humanity’s spiritual civilization. The Foundation announces the annual awards in the areas of astronomy, medicine and life sciences, and mathematical sciences.

The 67-year old Kulkarni won along with Peter Sarnak, a Mathematics Professor at Princeton, and Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the USA for their work in life sciences and medicine.
Kulkarni won the prize for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects.
