Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on Canadian intelligence service claim on New Delhi’s “interference” in Canadian elections in 2021 as uncorroborated and unsubstantiated.
The allegations can further dent lukewarm India-Canada ties.
In 2021, the government of India had «intent to interfere and likely conducted clandestine activities,» including using an Indian government proxy agent in Canada, according to an unclassified summary written by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), reported CBC.
Sources described the report and charges as uncorroborated and unsubstantiated and questioned the motive behind the attempt to target India. Sources told ET that the Trudeau government is trying to shift attention from Chinese interference in Canadian politics and Chinese inroads in the current ruling party.
Interestingly according to CBC that the “reports all bear notes of caution about the summaries being possibly uncorroborated, single-sourced or incomplete”. Sources told ET that CBC went ahead with its report despite facts being incomplete.
“CSIS alleges that in 2021, the Indian government's foreign interference activities «were centered on a small number of electoral districts.» The government of India targeted those ridings, CSIS wrote, because there was a perception by India that «a portion of Indo-Canadian voters were sympathetic to the Khalistani movement or pro-Pakistan political stances,» according to CBC.
