Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has recommended the appointment of his successor justice Sanjiv Khanna, top court's senior-most judge after the CJI, to the Centre. CJI Chandrachud, who took charge on November 9, 2022, is set to demit office on November 10.
Justice Khanna will have a tenure of a little over six months before he retires on May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna began his law practice in 1983 in areas of taxation, arbitration, commercial and environmental matters among other things. He was appointed as additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made permanent judge one year later.
He was elevated to SC on January 18, 2019.
On October 12, the Centre had sent a letter to CJI Chandrachud, urging him to name his successor.
