climate change also impacted the production of mangoes in many parts of the country. Mango production in Konkan region also received a slump due to climate changes and pest attacks. Unseasonal rains and unexpected rise in temperatures have adversaly impacted the production of Alphonso mangoes in Maharashtra.
In the last few years, the unseasonal rains especially during the flowering and fruit development time of mangoes. Other than unseasonal rains, extended low temperatures, and then sudden rise in maximum temperature during February to March also affect the production of Mangoes and their qualities. Konkan districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindudurg are the most affected, reports Mongabay.
This year is no different for the mango growers of these districts. For years scientists have been advocating the use of bagging technique to save mangoes from pest attacks. Most of the scientists believe the bagging technique to be a significant way of saving mango production and retaining their qualities.
Mango farming spans around three different seasons, hence is highly vulnerable to climate change. Farmers who follow scientific advisories systematically, and include bagging, are able to produce beautiful and tasty mangoes, T. Damodaran, director of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research’s Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture at Rehmankhera, Uttar Pradesh told The Hindu.
