Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has written to the Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya raising concerns over the removal of the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation from undergraduate MBBS curriculum.
According to the new guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission, three departments — Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), Respiratory Medicine, and Emergency Medicine — are not included in the list of departments that every medical college/institution must have.
PMR is an exclusive medical specialty which treats and rehabilitates various Divyangjan patients with locomotor, neurological and various chronic debilitating diseases.
According to the WHO report 2011, 1 out of 7 people suffer from some or the other form of disability across the globe.
«This translates into a staggering figure of one Divyangjan in every alternate household. Adding to these figures, there are paediatric and geriatric patients and others having temporary and permanent disabilities who require the services from PMR.
