suicide in Rajastan's Kota, the hub of coaching centers in India.
The 16-year-old JEE aspirant took his own life late on Monday night in his hostel room. The boy's body was discovered by the hostel warden on Tuesday morning, who immediately alerted the police.
The teenager has been identified as Shubh Choudhary, a resident of Chhattisgarh. He had been preparing for the JEE at a coaching institute in Kota and had been staying in a hostel room in the Jawahar Nagar police station area for the past two years.
According to DSP Bhawani Singh, the circle officer of the area, Shubh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his room on Monday night. No suicide note was found at the scene. Shubh had recently appeared for the JEE-Mains, and while the results were declared on Monday, the police are still awaiting confirmation of his result status.
Concerned after receiving no response to their calls on Tuesday morning, Shubh's parents approached the hostel warden to check on him. It was then that the tragic discovery was made. Reportedly, the hostel room did not have anti-suicide device on the fan, as directed by authorities earlier. Worried by a spate of suicides by hanging, Kota authorities had last August ordered hostels to install a spring device on ceiling fans to stop students from taking their lives.
Meanwhile, Shubh's body has been taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination after the arrival of his parents from Chhattisgarh.
This marks the third suicide by a coaching student in
