Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has planned to employ the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO), a non-profit under the Odisha government, to address the problem of loss of drinking water during transmission, reported TOI.
About 58 per cent of water is wasted in transmission in the city, much higher than the national average of around 20 per cent.
WATCO has been able to address a similar problem by bringing the loss of water rate down to 15 per cent from 50 per cent, said officials.
The DJB technically terms the lost water as non-revenue water (NRW) or ‘unaccounted water'. It is water produced and supplied from water treatment plants but not reaching consumers.

WATCO supplies drinking water and manages sewerage of all the urban local bodies in Odisha, including cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri. The company will discuss with DJB the supply of 24x7 drinking water from the tap, which it has achieved in Puri.
A few officials from DJB visiter Bhubaneshwar and Puri in September 2023 to inspect the project, including the the real-time digital water management system.
A team of WATCO officials visited Delhi to understand the scope of work and the ground situation.
«Since February, the urban development department has sent the cabinet notes back four times to Delhi Jal Board, each time with a different objection/query,» disclosed a Delhi govt source.
