Delhi, political parties vie for the support of traders and businesses, enticing them with pre-electoral assurances of addressing long-standing issues. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP, Congress, and AAP, the three main political combatants in the capital, promised in their manifestos to provide relief from shops being sealed, to formulate a policy on parking, simplify the Goods & Services Tax regime and establish a trade commission and welfare board for traders.

With the May 25 polls looming, traders’ associations are disappointed at the non-resolution of these issues. This year, the traders, traditionally considered a voter base for BJP, maintain that they will support only the candidates who provide deadlines to address the outstanding problems. Empty promises won’t do.

Kamal Kumar, general secretary, Federation of Sadar Bazar Traders, alleged harassment at the hands of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi over notices for sealing of shops for abuse of buildings regulations and non-payment of property tax. «Shops have been sealed despite ours being a special area, protected under law. The local representatives are aware of our problems. We are asked to provide decades’ old documents and when we somehow manage to find and submit them, officials still point out irregularities,” complained Kumar, who hopes for a concrete solution.
