Donald John Trump was born into wealth, but his family’s story didn’t begin with towering skyscrapers and five-star resorts. His father, Fred Trump Sr., was a self-made real estate tycoon who built his fortune from the ground up. Born in New York in 1905, Fred launched a construction business at just 15, capitalizing on the post-World War II housing boom to develop over 27,000 apartments in Brooklyn and Queens. By the time of his death in 1999, Fred had amassed an estimated $300 million fortune. However, his business acumen came with a hard edge—his granddaughter Mary Trump later described him as emotionally abusive, a claim Donald and his late brother Robert have dismissed.
His wife, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, hailed from the remote Scottish Isle of Lewis. Immigrating to the U.S. in the 1930s, she married Fred in 1936 and became a dedicated philanthropist, supporting causes related to cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities. The couple had five children: Maryanne, Elizabeth, Fred Jr., Donald, and Robert, each carving out distinct paths in business, law, and politics.
