Trump’s return gives Modi a chance to bolster India’s image with the US and its allies, which have increased scrutiny recently on the nation’s close ties with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and its alleged role in violence against Khalistanis in the US and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year alleged that Indian government agents have been involved in killing dissidents living abroad, and cases are now making their way through US and Canadian courts.
Officials in New Delhi, who asked not to be identified, expect a new Trump administration to be less stringent in demanding accountability from India’s government for its alleged involvement in extra-judicial killings in Canada and the US. The Biden administration had been pushing India to probe and prosecute the officials allegedly involved. India has officially denied orchestrating any assassinations.
