Earth gets a new mini moon for two months: Will it be visible to the naked eye or telescope?
The phenomenon, called a mini moon, will last for approximately two months, from September 29 to November 25, 2024, according to scientists, as per a report by Live Science.
Although this celestial event is intriguing, the mini moon will be difficult to spot for most skywatchers.
What is a Mini Moon?
A mini moon refers to a small celestial body, typically an asteroid, that is temporarily captured by Earth’s gravitational pull. These events are relatively frequent, with similar occurrences happening every few decades.
The asteroid 2024 PT5, which was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on August 7, is the latest to be drawn into Earth’s orbit. This newly detected space rock is just 33 feet (10 meters) wide, making it hard to observe without specialized equipment.
