Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Election commission of India has published the Delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies and it is a settled fact now as the President of India will soon notify it and there is no point opposing it. He said that the state government is strategizing for the next round of delimitation exercise slated for 2026. Sarma while talking to media persons on Monday said, “ The President of India will notify the Delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in the next couple of days.
How we propose to work on this will be spelled out in my Independence Day speech. It will take at least two months to work on the proposals of delimitation. The government will have to work on how the blocks and circle offices will be re-organised.
How Panchayats will be placed.” He added, “ We are discussing the administrative measures that need to be taken.” When asked about opposition to delimitation, he said, “ I have not seen it. However there might be some opposition somewhere. But there is no point in opposition as delimitation is a settled fact.” The political landscape of Assam stands changed after almost 37 years as the Election commission of India has published the Delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies.
The redrawn seats and rechristening of seats has evoked reactions in the political spectrum as many leaders will have to restart or look for new seats. Dissatisfied over the delimitation order in Assam, senior leader of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and MLA from Amguri assembly constituency Pradip Hazarika resigned from all posts of the party. AGP is an ally of the BJP led government in Assam.
