This aggressive approach marks the latest chapter in the Trump administration’s campaign to slash government bureaucracy under the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—an agency Musk now oversees alongside Vivek Ramaswamy. With Trump urging Musk to move “even faster” in eliminating federal jobs, the email has raised serious concerns about the future of the U.S. government workforce.
The email, sent on February 22, carried a subject line that seemed almost casual: “What did you do last week?” But its implications were anything but. The message instructed employees to respond with a summary of their weekly accomplishments by Monday at 11:59 PM ET—or face automatic termination.
Musk reinforced the ultimatum on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
