Elon Musk's satellite company,Starlink, may soon receive approval from the telecom ministry to offer its services in India.
According to a TOI report, a high-level meeting scheduled for later this month is expected to address Starlink's proposal for a global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services license. While approval seems likely, potential last-minute issues could still cause delays.
Once Starlink secures the GMPCS license, it will need additional approvals from various government departments and the Department of Space before it can officially accept orders and move forward with its operations.
Currently, One Web, backed by Sunil Mittal, and Jio, in partnership with Luxembourg-based SES and led by Mukesh Ambani, have obtained GMPCS licenses. Jeff Bezos' 'Project Kuiper' is also anticipated to enter the Indian market.
Starlink, a division of Musk's SpaceX aerospace company, initially faced challenges when it entered the Indian market in 2021.
The telecom ministry reprimanded the company for accepting advance payments from subscribers before obtaining a license. At that time, Starlink had received over 5,000 pre-orders for its devices in India, collecting $99 from each customer.
