According to Reiner Haseloff, the premier of Saxony-Anhalt, the suspect had lived in Germany for nearly two decades and was not previously known to authorities as an Islamist. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Verified footage from the German news agency dpa showed the suspect’s arrest at a tram stop, where police held him at gunpoint before taking him into custody.
The Magdeburg tragedy adds to a troubling history of extremist attacks in Germany. On the same date eight years ago, a Tunisian man affiliated with the Islamic State group rammed a truck through a Berlin Christmas market, killing 13 people. More recently, a knife attack at a festival in Solingen in August claimed three lives and injured eight others.
Elon Musk’s Criticism of German LeadershipTesla CEO Elon Musk openly criticised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz following the Magdeburg attack, calling for his resignation. “Scholz should resign immediately,” Musk posted on X. He further described the incident as “deliberate mass murder” and criticised Germany’s handling of the suspect.
