A Ramachandran died from prolonged illness at his residence here on Saturday. He was 89.
«He was sick for quite some time now and passed away at 9 this morning from medical complications,» his son Rahul told PTI.
Ramachandran will be cremated at Lodhi Road crematorium on Monday at 2.30 pm, he added.
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan condoled the death of the artist, saying that his paintings which were influenced by rural life and myths attained global fame.
«Heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Padmabhushan A Ramachandran, noted artist hailing from Kerala. His paintings, which were influenced by rural life & myths, attained global fame. May his soul attain Mukti,» Khan said in a Facebook post.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also condoled the death of the renowned painter and sculptor.
The CM said, in a statement issued by his office, that Ramachandran was an internationally renowned artist who was also focused on understanding the most modern art trends and writing informative articles about them.
State Fisheries Minister Saji Cheriyan too expressed his condolences by saying that Ramachandran's paintings were inspired by the strength of Indian artistic heritage.
Cheriyan, in a Facebook post, also said that it was doubtful if there was any other artist who has so comprehensively expressed this heritage which includes Kerala's mural paintings.
Born in 1935 in Attingal, Kerala, Ramachandran was known for his monumental canvases, colourful oil and watercolour paintings.
