"...and undoubtedly all of that played into the withdrawal of the AI Liability Directive proposal," he told ET.
The EU recently withdrew its AI Liability Directive, which was first proposed in 2022 and proposed to penalise offending organisations for causing harm through AI systems. The European Union's AI regulation came into effect in August 2024, with various provisions of the Act coming into effect through 2025 till 2027.
The withdrawal came at the heels of the US Vice President JD Vance's comment that the EU's AI regulation is excessive, during the recently concluded Paris AI Summit -an opinion shared by other governments, including India.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister for IT previously said that India is taking a unique techno-legal approach towards regulation rather than a tightening approach that Europe has. «We must not let innovation be stifled by the heavy hand of regulation,» he said.
