The Federal Reserve’s concern about consumers’ expectations of future inflation helps explain why it is paying closer attention to an inflation measure that includes volatile food and energy prices as it aggressively raises interest rates.
The Labor Department is set to report its June inflation reading by this gauge, its consumer-price index, on Wednesday. The 8.6% rise in the CPI in May from a year before added to signs that the inflation outlook was worsening and prompted the Fed to accelerate its rate increases last month.
