Lionsgate has announced that Flight Risk, a thriller directed by Mel Gibson, will now release on January 24, 2025. The film was initially scheduled to hit theaters on October 18, 2024. Lionsgate chose to push the release date to avoid competition with other October films, giving Flight Risk a quieter opening weekend in January. The movie will now be released alongside Disney-inspired indie horror comedy Screamboat and IFC Films’ thriller Inheritance, featuring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans.

Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery. The film is based on a 2020 Black List script written by Jared Rosenberg. The story follows Wahlberg’s character, a pilot tasked with transporting an Air Marshal, played by Dockery, and a fugitive, portrayed by Grace, across Alaska. As the flight progresses, tensions rise and secrets are revealed, creating suspense among the trio.
Flight Risk is Mel Gibson’s first film as a director since Hacksaw Ridge in 2016. Hacksaw Ridge was a war drama that received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture. Gibson is producing Flight Risk alongside Bruce Davey through their company, Icon Productions, with Davis Entertainment and Hammerstone Studios also backing the project.
