Terry Gou, the founder of tech giant Foxconn, has revealed his running mate for the upcoming presidential election in Taiwan. Gou, who declared his candidacy as an independent candidate last month, introduced Tammy Lai, a well-known actress renowned for her role in a prominent Netflix drama series.
Despite months of speculation surrounding his potential candidacy, Gou has faced challenges in gaining significant support in opinion polls.
He currently trails behind the favored candidate, William Lai of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who serves as Taiwan's vice president.
During a press conference held in Taipei, Gou officially introduced Tammy Lai, highlighting her extensive experience as an actress, author, and singer. Notably, Lai portrayed a presidential candidate in the popular Taiwanese Netflix series «Wave Makers» earlier this year, ultimately securing victory in the show's fictional election.
The series, which revolves around the members of an election campaign team, including a supportive manager who addresses a sensitive issue involving a young staffer, sparked a renewed #MeToo movement in Taiwan.
In response to her selection as Gou's running mate, Lai expressed her enthusiasm, stating, «I'm quite open-minded.
I told myself that last year I would set no ceiling for myself, and I didn't expect I'd actually be raised up this far. After meeting Chairman Gou two or three times, I was very sure he's someone I could cooperate with.
