Nifty crossed the 25,000 milestone for the first time while Sensex zoomed past the 82,000 level to yet another record high.
At 9:23 am, the BSE Sensex was trading 345 points, or 0.42%, higher at 82,043. The Nifty50 was up 117 points, or 0.47%, trading at 25,068.
From the Sensex stocks, Maruti Suzuki, JSW Steel, Tata Motors, Power Grid, and Adani Ports were the top gainers, rising 1-3.5%. On the flip side, M&M, Infosys, UltraTech Cement, and Sun Pharma opened in the red.
Overnight, the Fed held interest rates steady as expected but Jerome Powell spoke of a «growing sense of confidence» that rate cuts could start in September.
Sector-wise Nifty Metal rose 1.5%, and Nifty Bank surged 0.6%. Nifty Auto, IT, Consumer Durables, and Oil & Gas also edged higher. The broader, more domestically focussed Nifty Smallcap100 and Nifty Midcap100 rose 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
Tata Steel shares opened 2% higher after posting a rise in quarterly profit.
Coal India rose 3% after it beat quarterly profit estimates on higher volumes and lower costs
