Mumbai woman flight attendant, Rupal Ogrey, has died by suicide while in police custody at the Andheri lock-up, TOI reported. The accused, identified as Vikram Athwal (35), who worked as a garbage collector, was arrested by the Powai police within 12 hours of the discovery of the crime few days back.
As per the official report, authorities became suspicious on Friday morning when they noticed that Athwal, who had entered the toilet at the Andheri lock-up, was unresponsive to repeated calls.
Concerned for his well-being, they decided to break down the door, only to discover the accused hanging from a water pipe in the toilet, having used his own cloth for the tragic act.
Powai police reported, «The door was broken and Athwal was found hanging from the water pipe in the toilet. He used his own cloth to hang himself.» Athwal was scheduled to be presented before the Andheri court on Friday, following three days in police custody.
Meanwhile, the body has been sent for post-mortem, added the police.
Durnig investigation, Powai police questioned approximately 45 housekeeping staff members and utilized technical assistance.
Upon his initial arrest, the police had also recovered the murder weapon and the blood-stained uniform, which Athwal had attempted to clean in the bathroom after committing the crime.
During the investigation, Athwal reportedly confessed that his original intent had been to intimidate and assault the young flight attendant. However, as Rupal Ogrey resisted, the situation escalated, leading to her being stabbed twice in the neck.
