Al-Aly’s team studied the health data of more than two million people with diabetes from the veteran affairs databases comparing those on GLP-1 medication with those on other diabetes treatments. They tracked outcomes for 175 conditions, including infections, substance use issues, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis and gastrointestinal issues, over about four years.
The team concluded that those taking GLP-1 medication had a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s, dementia, addiction, seizures, blood clotting issues, heart conditions, and infections when compared to people using other diabetes treatments. However, they also experienced an increase in gastrointestinal concerns, low blood pressure, arthritis, and certain kidney and pancreatitis problems—side effects previously documented for these drugs.
