Google is in advanced talks with Indian electronics manufacturer Dixon Technologies as well as with Bharat FIH, an arm of Taiwan’s Foxconn, to set up production of its flagship smartphone Pixel 8 in India, people aware of the development told ET.
On Thursday, Alphabet Inc’s chief executive Sundar Pichai announced that his company’s first made-in-India Pixel devices will be rolled out in early 2024, providing a significant boost to the country’s ambitions to emerge as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
Google’s stated plans come on the back of the world’s most valuable firm Apple scaling up local production in India for domestic use and exports, to the extent that it made available some models of its latest iPhone 15 series that were made locally, simultaneously with China-made ones.
“We shared plans at #GoogleforIndia to manufacture Pixel smartphones locally and expect the first devices to roll out in 2024. We’re committed to being a trusted partner in India’s digital growth,” Pichai said on microblogging platform X.
The technology giant also unveiled an ambitious foray into digital lending by its payment platform Google Pay, which commands a 33.3% share, second only to the 47% share of Indian digital payments held by Walmart-owned PhonePe.
Google also expanded its partnership with government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and India’s local language based artificial intelligence programme Bhashini along with projects
