Hindustan Times, women of Uttara Kannada district are receiving regular health check-ups, nutritious food, and medicine, courtesy of a noble initiative undertaken by district administration. The district officials of Uttara Kannada has adopted roughly 358 women as part of an initiative to provide extra care to expectant mothers and their newborn.
The district's women and child welfare department said the decision behind adopting the expectant mothers is to reduce the death rate of women during and post-pregnancy. The higher rank officials in the district adopt pregnant women who are registered under the national health mission scheme.
Under the adoption scheme, officials take care of pregnant women till the time of childbirth. Besides they also extend care to the newborns by remaining in regular touch with doctors and health workers like ASHA.
In comparison to the severely drought-hit region in Karnataka, the malnutrition rate among children is quite low in Uttara Kannada. Uttara Kannada deputy commissioner Gangubai Mankar said, "We aim to eradicate malnutrition among the newborns and the mothers by supplying solid food, egg, milk, calcium tablets among other things...will keep a record of the latest health status of the newborns’ weight, giving them the regular vaccination".
The deputy commissioner praised the contributions of ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers alos. Mankar, who has also adopted a poor woman from Mallapur village, said officials are being in touch with the women, their families"Exciting news! Mint is now on WhatsApp Channels
